Article reported that Ukraine postponed on the 8 May 2012 a central European regional summit planned for 11-12 May 2012 after at least eight European heads of state refused to attend in protest at the jailing and alleged mistreatment of Yulia Tymoshenko, the opposition leader.

The postponement was seen as a major blow for Viktor Yanukovich, Ukraine’s President, as the country prepared to co-host the Euro 2012 soccer tournament, increasing his international isolation amid claims he was cementing power by persecuting rivals and eroding democracy.
