Ultimate sacrifice for the EU

Spare a thought for those poor officials at the European Commission's Directorate-General for agriculture (DGVI) who have effectively been asked to work day and night on dismantling the very system which provides them with a (very tidy) living.

Asked recently if Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler's Common Agricultural Policy overhaul was forcing DGVI officials to reform themselves out of a job, one Fischler aide nodded gravely. “Yes, but we are prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice in the wider interests of the European Union,” he said.
