On the eve of the 60th anniversary of the United Nations’ Declaration of Human Rights, this Policy Brief by Rosa Balfour considers whether the EU’s portrayal of itself as a 'unique' champion of human rights is justified. While acknowledging the EU's commitment to the cause, it concludes that its actual record is far from perfect. It calls, in particular, for better coordination of EU and individual Member States’ efforts, and warns that respect for - and the promotion of - human rights must begin at home.
