UN rift at west’s plan for Kosovan nation

Western states said on the 19 December 2007 they were determined to press ahead with a plan that would lead to independence for Kosovo in spite of the opposition of Russia, which has called the move illegal. Western diplomats said the European Union and Nato would now take over the lead role in shepherding Kosovo towards statehood, with international supervision providing safeguards for the Serbian minority in the majority Albanian-speaking province.
