Date: 24/09/1998 It seems Trade Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan is determined to raise French hackles over his plans to create a common commercial area with the US. Last time he came up with such a plan, Brittan dubbed it the New Transatlantic Market-place or NTM but, unfortunately, this turned out to be the acronym used by famed French rappers Nique Ta Mère - a phrase exhorting fans to have unnaturally close relations with their mothers. The name, along with the concept, had to be changed. Instead, the Commissioner came forward last week with a new package retitled Partenariat Economique Transatlantique or Pet - a slang word used to describe unseemly bodily noises - guaranteed to induce further sniggers in the francophone world. |
