Financial Times reports on the reaction of Smisek, chief executive of newly merged United Continental Holdings in the US, on the EU’s emission scheme. According to him, the European Union’s plan to bring almost every leading carrier into its scheme to limit carbon emissions is so ‘beyond the pale’, that a foreign government is certain to challenge it, says the head of the world’s largest airline by passenger traffic.

In less than eight months, all airlines flying into and within Europe will have to abide by the EU’s emissions trading scheme, which has covered power companies, steelmakers and other industries based inside the region since it began in 2005.
