Date: 19/11/1998 Entre Nous' esteemed friends in the EU institutions look set to have a merrier Christmas thanks to their staff unions' success in negotiating a 1.8&percent; pay rise this week. The salary increase still has to be approved by national governments, but the proposed rise is understood to be in line with a complicated formula drawn up by the Union's statistical office, and should be rubber-stamped without a hitch. “I'm ecstatic,” beamed one happy Commission official after hearing about the increase.
