Rating agency Fitch gave Hungary back its investment-grade status in May 2016. The country's credit rating had been lowered to junk status in 2011. The Hungarian media are very much at odds over Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's impact on Hungary's credit rating.

Reform measures launched by the Government in 2010 had borne results, and these weree reflected in the upgrade by Fitch Ratings, Minister for National Economy Mihály Varga said at a press conference on the 23 May 2016.
