Urban renewal, ethnicity and social exclusion in Europe:

This book is a stocktaking of current knowledge of the impact of urban renewal policies on the social exclusion of ethnic minorities in six European countries: Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Portugal and Britain. Social exclusion has received considerable attention from policy-makers and researchers in recent years yet spatial aspects of exclusion have received comparatively little attention. This book aims to begin to redress this imbalance. Contributors to the volume were asked to review current understanding of the links between urban renewal and the social exclusion of ethnic minorities, focusing on three key processes; the use of urban policy frames; power relations within policy making processes; and racialisation. Each chapter follows a standard format, dealing with; institutions of local (municipal and regional) politics and government, and inclusion/exclusion of black and ethnic minorities; the history of the black/ethnic minority population and the racialisation of politics; urban policy frames and their evolution in recent decades; the history of urban renewal; a review of evidence about the implications of urban renewal activity on the social exclusion of black and ethnic minorities; selected case studies; and an agenda for future research in the field of urban renewal and social exclusion.
