The US blamed Europe for alienating Turkey from the west as the country became one of two members of the United Nations Security Council to vote against stepping up sanctions on Iran, June 2010.

Robert Gates, US Defence Secretary, suggested European Union reluctance to admit Turkey as a member could be pushing it away from the west. He also suggsted that Turkey's growing hostility to Israel may have been partly caused by its effective rejection by the European Union.
