US dismay over Blair’s stance on EU defence

The United States Government is concerned at UK Prime Minister Tony Blair's backing for more European Union co-operation on defence and the possibility of an independent military structure outside NATO. There is a sense of confusion in the US as it was felt that Mr Blair would not support such a move. For the US, NATO's primacy in Europe is of real importance.
