US-Swiss tax accord stalls after vote

A bitter battle over Swiss bank secrecy resurfaced on the 8 June 2010, as the lower chamber of parliament rejected a crucial deal hammered out painstakingly between Bern and Washington in 2009.

The House of Representatives rejected the deal with the United States that would have enabled the handover of data on thousands of customers of the Swiss bank UBS.

The decision prompted a backlash from Swiss bankers and economists fearful of the fallout for Switzerland.
