Date: 22/11/01 SLOVAK Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan has welcomed the recent European Commission progress report on candidate countries as "fair and objective". And he accepted the criticisms the report made on Slovakia's readiness for EU membership, particularly on the Romany issue. Speaking in Brussels after meeting Enlargement Commissioner Günter Verheugen, he said the country was already tackling concerns over the treatment of the Roma minority with initiatives in education, job creation and representation. "A lot of Romany children leave school early, so the administration is investing a lot of money in the education of young Romanies. The Roma issue, of course, is not just a problem for Slovakia but for other candidate countries too," he added.
