WITH much fanfare and surrounded by students at a school in Brussels yesterday (7 March), European leaders opened the debate on the future of Europe.
Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson, European Commission President Romano Prodi, Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt and European Parliament Vice President David Martin unveiled a new Internet site (www.europa.eu.int/futurum) which they hope will be a forum for contributions from citizens and organisations across Europe. "When discussing the shape, future role and identity of the European Union, it is especially important - and I feel this very strongly - that every effort is made to reach out to young people," said Persson.
