Further information and background:

On 11 April, 120 Members of the Macedonian Parliament had to vote a motion of no-confidence against Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev.

This motion was brought by the opposition party VMRO-DPMNE who believed that the friendship agreement FYR Macedonia signed with Bulgaria in 2017 was harmful for the country and accused the government of lacking strategy in the talks it has with Greece to settle a dispute it has had with the country since 1991 when FYR Macedonia became independent. Greece is objecting to the country being called FYR Macedonia because Macedonia is already a region in northern Greece. FYR Macedonia is ready to make concessions and become Upper Macedonia to solve this name dispute. Solving the dispute would allow the country to immediately become a NATO member and also to start accession negotiations with the EU.
