The European Commissioner for the Environment, Margot Wallström, and the Spanish Minister for the Environment, Jaume Matas, made a joint declaration on 9 December 2002, confirming their agreement to carry out a study into the environmental consequences of the sinking of the tanker, the Prestige, off the coast of Galicia in November 2002.
