Warning of heavy penalties for missing landfill targets

Both UK local authorities and the government risk being hit by hundreds of millions of pounds in fines for failing to hit waste recycling targets, the National Audit Office said in a report 'Reducing the reliance on landfill in England', published on 25 July 2006.
