Water industry warns on cost of EU rules

The UK water industry warned on 7 January 2002 that European rules on cutting discharges of hazardous substances into water supplies could cost manufacturers and farmers billions of pounds. The Water Framework Directive will put the onus for protection of the water environment on the premises found to be the source of the discharge, rather than on water companies.
