Women's movements in the West have followed a historical sequence from the suffragette movement in the late 19th century to contemporary emphases on differences and identity politics. Although there have always been ideological variations and appropriations of different political stances within feminism, for our purposes here, we will utilize the common breakdown of the feminist movement into three waves.
