In the Action Plan of the European Commission Strategy for Equality between Women and Men 2010-2015, the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) was given the responsibility for the development of an EU Gender Equality Index.

Its aim is to provide a reliable and feasible statistical tool and benchmarking instrument to assess the state of affairs in the field of gender equality. Based on a commonly acceptable and harmonised methodology, the Index should serve as an effective monitoring tool to identify trends in gender equality at EU and Member State levels, strong and weak aspects of national situations and facilitate inter-country comparisons.

The Gender Equality Index for Europe was launched officially in Brussels in June 2013.
