Youth statistics play an important role in evaluating the progress toward the goals set in the EU Youth Strategy (2010-2018): better educational and job opportunities, as well as promoting the active citizenship, social inclusion and solidarity of young people (i.e. those aged between 15 and 29).

Youth statistics cover the fields of action identified in the Youth Strategy, as well as demographical contextual information:
- Demography gives some background indications on the main trends affecting the youth population.
- Education and training informs about the participation of young people in formal and non-formal education and training.
- Employment and entrepreneurship informs about young people's integration into the labour market, either as employees or as entrepreneurs.
- Health and well-being includes indicators on health and well-being of young people with a focus on life styles, health status as well as mental health.
- Social inclusion includes indicators on the young population at risk of poverty or social exclusion.
- Culture and creativity includes an indicator on the frequency of participating in cultural activities. New indicators are under development.
- Participation includes indicators on the participation of youth in the whole society.
- Volunteering includes an indicator on the participation in informal voluntary activities.
- Youth and the World should measure the mobilisation of youth in global policy-making at all levels using existing youth networks and tools. However there is currently no identified data in European statistics for this objective.
