Book abstract:

With the latest edition of this publication, which updates the 2000 version, Europa claim to have provided a 'a one-stop reference source on Western European Affairs'. The book certainly brings together a wealth of information including commentaries on a range of regional issues, statistics and directory information relating to the area.

The book is divided into two parts. Part one covers issues of regional importance through a series of essays written by well-known experts on Western European Affairs. The subjects covered include defence, immigration and asylum, European monetary union and relations between Europe and the developing world. Part two provides country surveys for over 20 European territories listed in alphabetical order. Included in each survey is a summary of the geography, history and economy of the country as well as a chronology. This is followed by a statistical survey that includes general demographic data as well as more specific figures on industrial sectors, finance and external trade. Each country survey concludes with a directory containing names, addresses, email and internet contacts of businesses operating in the country as well as further information on the government political organisations.

This book will be useful for students studying business or politics in Europe as well as providing a time saving source for librarians faced with a specific enquiry regarding a country in Western Europe
