What is Sarkozysm? The Sarkozy Revolution of the French Right-wing

Abstract / Résumé:

Nicolas Sarkozy embodied a turning point in the French right-wing history. He represented probably the French version of what was called the 'New Right' in the United States or in the United Kingdom in the 1980s. This New right is called in France 'la droite décomplexée', that is to say a right-wing movement that openly defends conservative beliefs without any kind of complex. However, Sarkozysm not really a political ideology based upon a set of ideas. It is, rather, a new way of being involved in politics in France through a new political language and a new political strategy whose aim is to gain power or to stay in power on a conservative stance. In the end, Nicolas Sarkozy's defeat in 2012 and retreat from political life do not necessarily represent the end of Sarkozysm. Sarkozysm may outlive Nicolas Sarkozy.

Nicolas Sarkozy incarne un tournant dans l’histoire de la droite française. Il représente probablement la version française de ce qui a été appelé la « Nouvelle droite » aux États-Unis ou au Royaume-Uni durant les années 1980. Cette Nouvelle droite est ce que l’on appelle en France « la droite décomplexée », à savoir une droite qui se revendique comme ouvertement conservatrice sans aucun complexe. Cependant, le sarkozysme n’est pas vraiment une idéologie. Il s’agit bien plutôt d’une nouvelle façon de faire de la politique en France par le biais d’un nouveau langage politique et d’une nouvelle stratégie politique dont l’objectif est de parvenir au pouvoir ou de s’y maintenir. La défaite de Nicolas Sarkozy en 2012 et son retrait de la vie politique ne signifient pas pour autant la fin du sarkozysme. Le sarkozysme pourrait ainsi survivre à Nicolas Sarkozy.
