Date: 04/09/1997 Meetings THE Special Committee for Agriculture meets every week, except when agriculture ministers gather for their monthly session, beginning at 3pm on Monday and running until business has been concluded on Tuesday. The rationale behind the late starting time is to allow experts to jet into Brussels from all over the Union. Although Belgium, Greece, Spain, France, Portugal and the UK keep their SCA spokesmen in Brussels, the remaining nine governments send their representatives over every week, but these are backed by Brussels-based experts. Meetings are chaired by a senior agricultural official from the country holding the EU presidency and each member state fields a team of officials, often including a specific expert on a particular dossier from the domestic agriculture ministry. Interpretation is provided into all 11 official EU languages. Meetings are rarely allowed to continue beyond 9pm as this would mean calling up a whole new team of interpreters.
