After many years of debate and prevarication the United Kingdom government announced on the 25 October 2016 its support for a new runway at Heathrow Airpprt – the first full length runway in the south-east of England since the second world war. Conservative Member of Parliament Zac Goldsmith subsequently resigned from his Richmond Park constituency as a protest at this decision. Mr Goldsmith was also known as a Leave supporter in the Brexit referendum debate, although being the MP for a constituency which strongly voted for the UK to remain in the EU.
