Book abstract:

This book aims to provide a systematic investigation of the gender dimension to employment in the European Union. It explores both current differences in gender employment patterns between countries and the role of gender in the changing pattern of employment. The book is based upon research carried out when the authors acted as the co-ordinating team for the European Commission's Network of Experts on the Situation of Women in the Labour Market. Most of the information in this report is based upon the European Labour Force Surveys for 1983, 1987 and 1992 and from national reports provided by the network experts.

The book links trends in the structures of employment with new comparative data on the role of systems of welfare provision in order to explore economic activity patterns by gender.
