Date: 06/06/02 EUROPE is wasting the scientific brainpower of most of its female population, research Commissioner Philippe Busquin admitted this week. His comments follow the launch of a pan-European survey showing that huge numbers of women drop out of scientific careers at all stages - and are in a tiny minority of top scientific jobs despite counting for over half the number of scientific undergraduates. Busquin said 'discrimination arising from multiple factors' was responsible, adding this 'needs to be addressed' if the EU is to challenge the US and Japan in the R&D stakes.
