A post-‘Brexit’ Britain would struggle to make up for foregone trade opportunities with the EU by signing trade agreements with non-European countries. It could could leave the EU and then opt back in to those areas of the single market that it liked. Moreover, Britain outside the EU could not compensate for any higher trade costs with Europe by signing free trade agreements (FTAs) with other countries.
