Ukraine's path towards greater integration with the west was cast into doubt 14 September 2006 when Viktor Yanukovich, the country's prime minister, said he was putting on hold Kiev's plans to join Nato. However, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko criticised Mr Yanukovych for suggesting Kiev was not ready to join Nato.
