Book abstract:

This yearbook provides critical analysis of topical issues for those interested in legal studies. It includes contributions from within the broad areas of the law of the European Union; the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights; related aspects of international law; and comparative laws of Europe. The book contains three main sections covering articles on topical issues, surveys of developments in law and policy, and reviews of books. The contributors are mainly academics from a range of European universities.

The articles section includes coverage of the following topics: The influence of Free Movement of Persons, Services and Capital on National Direct Taxation; Public Service Provision in Competitive Markets; The Defeat of the European Tobacco Advertising Directive; Locating EC Environmental Law; Reflections on the Future of the Judicial System of the European Union after Nice; and Protecting Legitimate Expectations in European Community Law and in Domestic Irish Law. The Surveys section includes articles on: The Institutional Law of the European Union in 2000; European Union Employment and Social Policy 1999-2000; The Brussels Convention 1999-2000; EC Competition Law 1999-2000; and Common Foreign and Security Policy 1999-2000. The Review of Books section contains reviews of 17 relevant books published between 1998-2000. The book concludes with a 'Tables of Cases' section, including tables of cases before the European Court of Justice, the European Court of First Instance and national courts as well as a 'Tables of Legislation' section with EC and national legislation and a table of international conventions and agreements.

The book is aimed at the advanced student, academics, practioners, government and community officials. P. Eekhout is Professor of European Law at King's College London and T. Tridimas is Professor of European Law at the University of Southampton and College of Europe, Bruges.
