Abstract:

This book looks at the effects of policies and operational programmes at various levels on young people's integration into rural labour markets, and explores the changes in labour markets vis-à-vis the young person.

The book, which is organised over eleven chapters, opens with an introduction presenting the theoretical framework. Chapter two covers labour markets, social exclusion and youth transition. Existing knowledge on these issues is reviewed in chapter three, which also looks at the potential for developing indicators of rural labour market strength. Chapter four explains the methodology in more detail, and discusses issues arising from comparative international studies of this type. Chapters five to ten then examine the various themes, drawing on the reports produced by each national team concerning their own study area. The countries included in the study are the United Kingdom, Finland, Austria, France, Germany, Ireland and Portugal. The final concluding chapter presents a comprehensive summary and evaluation of the research and offers some signposts as to the way forward.

The work will interest scholars and students, policy makers and practitioners in the fields of rural studies and youth programmes.
