The European Semester
The European Semester provides a framework for the coordination of economic policies across the European Union. It allows EU countries to discuss their economic and budget plans and monitor progress at specific times throughout the year.
This document prepared by the Economic Governance Support Unit of DG Internal Policies of the European Parliament aims to show the differences between some key indicators of the 2017 Stability Programmes (SP) and the spring 2017 forecast of the European Commission (EC). In accordance with Article 4 of Council Directive 2011/85/EU, the budgetary planning of the Member States 'shall be based on the most likely macrofiscal scenario or on a more prudent scenario. (…). Significant differences between the chosen macrofiscal scenario and the (most recent) Commission’s forecast shall be described with reasoning (…)'.
