Memo: Commissioner Günther Oettinger welcomes political agreement on the Energy Efficiency Directive

A provisional deal ('Political Agreement') on the proposed energy efficiency directive was struck by the European Parliament and Council of the European Union negotiators on the 13 June 2012, after months of negotiations. The directive would require Member States to set themselves indicative national targets and save energy in specific ways, such as renovating buildings and stipulating the size of energy savings to be delivered by utilities.

The directive establishes a common framework of measures for the promotion of energy efficiency within the Union in order to achieve its 2020 20% headline target on energy efficiency and to pave the way for further energy efficiency improvements beyond that date.
