Memo: EU action in the fields of migration and asylum

This Memo published on 8 October 2013 provides an overview of EU activities in the fields of migration and asylum. It reviews a broad range of EU policies and instruments which aim to manage the increasing challenge of migration, security of external borders and asylum. The Memo came after the tragedy involving illegal immigrants from Africa took place off the Italian coast, near Lampedusa, in October 2013.
