German chancellor Angela Merkel gave an interview with German broadcaster ARD on 7 October 2015, in which she replied to questions on several topics. During the interview, Ms Merkel ruled out any freeze on migrants entering Germany, claiming that it would be impractical. Se also showed the conviction the country would cope with the flow of refugees. Earlier in the day, Ms Merkel addressed the European Parliament together with France's president François Hollande and called for rules on immigration to be rewritten. The German chancellor also stated her views on Turkey joining the European Union had not changed since it became clear the two sides would have to work together to tackle the migrant and refugee crisis. Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had visited the EU institutions earlier in the month, during which a draft action plan was built to improve cooperation between the two parts concerning migration and refugees. |
