France’s former Socialist Party economy minister, Arnaud Montebourg, announced in August 2016 that he would run in the 2017 presidential election after 'wasted' years under François Hollande.

On 2 October 2016, Mr Montebourg announced his intention to join the Socialist Party's primaries to be its presidential candidate in 2017.
