Agriculture and Fisheries Council, 16-17 December 2019

Summary:

A meeting of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council was held on 16-17 December 2019. The agenda includes the following items:

• Adoption of agreement on 2020 catch limits in the Atlantic, North Sea, Mediterranean Sea and for the EU vessels outside of EU-waters;
• Adoption of general approach on a proposed Regulation addressing the challenges facing the Western herring and cod fisheries in the Baltic Sea;
• Discussion on a progress report on the work carried out on the proposals relating to the post-2020 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform package;
• Discussion on the 'World's forests for the sustainable future';
• Adoption of conclusions in response to a Communication from the European Commission on protecting and restoring the world's forests;
• Adoption of conclusions on animal welfare;
• Adoption of conclusions on food fraud;
• Briefing on a number of other issues, including:
  • Minor use of pesticides;
  • Origin labelling;
  • Council conclusions on the EU bioeconomy strategy;
  • Impact of US tariffs on European agrifood products;
  • Budget flexibility in the EMFF.
