On 15 February 2017 the European Commission released a Fact Sheet concerning its vote in favour of a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between the EU and Canada (CETA). The EC claimed this new deal would create new opportunities for EU companies by boosting trade and strengthening economic relations. It would make business with Canada easier, remove customs duties, substantially improve access to public contracts, open up new sectors of the Canadian services market, offer predictable conditions for investors, and protect 143 European high quality agri-food products, known as Geographical Indications. Companies in several sectors, in particular small and medium enterprises (SMEs), would also benefit from the gains derived from the elimination of double testing. |
