Decision 2006/730/EC on the conclusion of the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for certain hazardous chemicals and pesticides in international trade

Summary:

On 30 May 2006 the European Commission presented a proposal for a Council Decision concluding the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for certain hazardous chemicals and pesticides in international trade. The Council of the European Union adopted the Decision on 25 September.

Under the auspices of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), negotiations for a Convention for the application of the Prior Informed Consent procedure for certain hazardous chemicals and pesticides in international trade were concluded in March 1998. The Convention was opened for signature at a Ministerial Diplomatic Conference held in September 1998 in Rotterdam.

In January 2002, the Commission put forward a proposal for a Council Decision concerning the Community’s ratification of the Convention. After the European Parliament had been consulted, the Council adopted Decision 2003/106/EC on the approval, on behalf of the European Community, of the Convention. The Convention entered into force on 24 February 2004.
