Decision (EU) 2019/524 on the position to be taken within the Joint Committee established by the Strategic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and Japan

Summary:

Council Decision of 21 March 2019 establishing the position to be taken on behalf of the Union regarding the adoption of the rules of procedure of the Joint Committee set up under the EU-Japan Strategic Partnership Agreement.

The Strategic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and its Member States, of the one part, and Japan, of the other part aims to strengthen the partnership between the EU and its Member States and Japan and to deepen and enhance bilateral cooperation on issues of mutual interest, reflecting shared values and common principles.

The Agreement will create a coherent, legally binding framework for the EU’s relations with Japan. The Agreement was signed in Tokyo on 17 July 2018 and is provisionally applied as of 1 February 2019.

The Joint Committee’s main task is to coordinate the overall partnership which is built upon the Agreement. The Joint Committee’s rules of procedure should be adopted as soon as possible in order to ensure the effective implementation of the Agreement.
