Groups and individuals intending to campaign in the EU Referendum in the United Kingdom in 2016 or 2017 would be able to register with the Electoral Commission from 1 February 2016.

The UK Government announced that the provisions of the European Union Referendum Act, which received Royal Assent on 17 December 2015, would commence on 1 February 2016. This meant that individuals and organisations that planned to spend more than £10,000 promoting an outcome during the referendum period would be able to register with the Electoral Commission.
