Summary:Set of conclusions adopted by the Council of the European Union on 18 July 2022, focusing on the priorities of the European Union (EU) at the United Nations (UN) during the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, running from September 2022 until September 2023. Further information:The conclusions were adopted against a background comprising Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which adds to existing geopolitical fractures and crises, such as those caused by the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic and climate change. The EU and its Member States recall the binding character of the UN Charter in its entirety, and stress the universality of the UN's founding principles. The EU reaffirms its conviction that the major challenges cannot be addressed by countries acting alone. Together with partners, the EU and its Member States vow to continue to defend democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and ensure peace and prosperity. Over the period considered, the EU aims to focus on upholding the UN Charter and the rule of law, addressing the global consequences of the war in Ukraine, promoting sustainable development and human rights, supporting access to quality education, strengthening global health security, and fighting climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, as well as shaping the global digital agenda. It is also highlighted that the multiple crises exposed some significant gaps in global governance and underlined the need to modernise and reform the United Nations in view of deepening geopolitical fractures. This set of conclusions was adopted at a meeting of the Council of the European Union held on 18 July 2022. |
