In a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Prodi cautioned against weakening Union institutions and said leaders should push for a more ambitious agenda than the one they agreed at last December's Nice summit - one that emphasises integrationist policies. "I strongly believe that the Community method, its rationalisation, its simplification and its extension are the Union's future and not its past," he said.
