Book abstract:

This latest edition of 'Human Rights in Europe' provides an in depth and up-to-date account of the Convention and its system of human rights protection. It covers the notable developments in this field since the third edition was published in 1993 such as the Human Rights Act 1998, the coming into force of Protocol No.11 and the addition of a number of parties to the Convention

The book opens with a brief historical overview of the Convention which provides the background for an examination of the scope of the guaranteed rights and freedoms over the course of the next seven chapters. The institutional machinery of the Convention is the focus of the final two chapters of the book which reviews how the arrangements functioned until November 1998 and now under Protocol No.11. The final chapter also mentions other arrangements apart from the European Convention on Human Rights which now exist for promoting and protecting human rights in Europe.

This book will be particularly useful for law students as it offers a clear explanation of what the Convention is for and how it functions for those with little basic knowledge. An alphabetical Table of Cases will also help the law student to quickly find commentary on specific cases.
