An EU official stated on 1 February 2016 that the so-called EU Regional Trust Fund in Response to the Syrian Crisis - also known as Madad fund - was going to be used to help keep refugees in FYR Macedonia and Serbia.

The fund was established by the European Union in December 2014 and originally designed to help Syrian refugees and overstrected host communities in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq.
