3rd Southern EU Countries Summit, Madrid, 10 April 2017

A meeting of heads of State and Government of seven southern European countries was held in Madrid on 10 April 2017. This was the third summit of the so-called 'Med Alliance' comprising Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Greece, Malta and Cyprus.

The summit addressed the future of the European Union and the challenges in relation to the process of the United Kingdom's EU withdrawal. A Joint Declaration was published as a result of the meeting, also mentioning other matters of interest for the European Union.

The Madrid Declaration was seen as the contribution of the southern countries to the wider discussion with the EU Member States (EU27) and Institutions as to the need to relaunch the Union at its 60th anniversary
