The employment guidelines present the common principles for national employment policies. This proposal focuses on the objective of achieving a sustainable social market economy, aligning the employment guidelines with the four dimensions of the Annual Sustainable Growth Strategy and with the Commission's Communication on 'A Strong Social Europe for Just Transitions'. It also integrates the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The updated guidelines introduce references to fair, transparent and predictable working conditions, the improvement of labour conditions of platform workers, an enhanced role for social partners, and the need for more attention to lower and middle-income groups when it comes to fair wages that provide for a decent standard of living.
