Abstract:

Ensuring the balance of power in Europe has, since the inception of its republic, been a core security interest for the US. Today, and for the entire post-Cold War period, the challenges to the European peace have emerged along the line running roughly from the Baltic to the Black Sea. This is what we call the Eastern Front. The goal of the American Enterprise Institute in this podcast is to better inform the American people about what’s going on there.

Episode 17 (featuring Marek Mankiszak):

Poland has emerged as a leader in its support for Ukraine and in its study of Russia’s and Putin’s psychology. Marek Mankiszak, head of the Russian Department at the Centre for Eastern Studies, joins Giselle, Dalibor, and Iulia to assess Putin’s motives for invading Ukraine.

Marek explains that Putin is trying to change the political order in Europe, because in his mind, the current order was unjustly forced on Russia in its weakest hour. He argues that Putin will not stop trying to take Ukraine, in spite of any sanctions. Finally, Marek gives evidence for the way in which Russia is quickly turning into a totalitarian state.
